US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has approached Brazil with a proposal, requesting a review of the sale of Anglo American’s nickel mines to a Chinese state-controlled miner as a condition for the United States to provide tariff relief, according to two individuals familiar with the matter who spoke to the South China Morning Post.

This request from Greer aims to curb 'non-market' buyers of critical minerals, aligning with broader trade and economic strategies.

During discussions to repeal the 50 percent tariffs that US President Donald Trump implemented on Brazilian goods last year, Washington proposed a plan. As initially reported by Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo and CNN Brazil on Thursday, this plan would require prior notification to Washington of sales involving mining assets before the completion of such transactions.

Additionally, it would subject deals involving rare earth elements to US scrutiny and provide American companies with an opportunity to purchase these assets before any sale received approval.First reported by Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo and CNN Brazil on Thursday, the proposal would have given Washington advance notice of mining asset sales before those deals closed, subjected transactions involving rare earths to US review, and opened a window for American companies to buy the assets before any sale won approval.
